APSR Partner: The University of Queensland

Project leader Andrew Bennett

Technical project leader: Christiaan Kortekaas / Eric Hornsby

Technical objectives: To develop and demonstrate workflows which will enable the linking of institutional information sources, such as publication repositories and research management solutions, to deliver a "portfolio" view of the research activities and interests of staff at partner institutions. To develop and demonstrate workflows for the ingest and use of publication and grants data from the ResearchMaster(RM) system as part of a proof of concept solution.

[edit] Project Description

This RIFF workflow project aims to create a system for the presentation of researcher profiles/portfolios.

This involves consultation with other APSR partners, namely the Universities of Sydney and Melbourne and UTS in reference to necessary data inputs as part of the development of the model for a "portfolio" and will be influenced by existing systems such as UQ reSEARCHers and "Find an Expert" at the University of Melbourne.

The model requires the replication of some of the existing functionality within the ResearchMaster (RM) system so that Fez+Fedora and other repository systems could be used to provide publication data and other information to be included in profiles for research reporting tasks such as the RQF.

The system is designed to be installed as a stand-alone product but will provide APIs to facilitate integration with institutional repositories and research management systems. The capacity to be built would also include documenting the data extraction process for RM data and a corresponding ingest function for Fez+Fedora and DSpace repository systems.

Individual profiles will include vCard-style contact details, photographs, details of current academic positions, qualifications, listing of current grants for research projects, membership of research groups, professional organisations or other bodies, CVs, and links to publications.

[edit] Project Tasks

  1. Write project specification document
  2. Convene and coordinate a reference group
  3. Confirm specification requirements with reference group, including:
    • identification of needed fields to be drawn from research management solution
    • definition of the display model for individual portfolios and link to publications repository
  4. Write the code, configuration files etc. for Fez+Fedora to deliver the required workflow in conjunction with the proof-of-concept workflow for ingest of ResearchMaster data
  5. Liaise with RIFF Software development team to specify and test workflow requirements for the RIFF submission and dissemination services for DSpace (ANU, UTS, Usyd) and Fez+Fedora (QU, Usyd, Swinburne)
  6. Write implementation document.
  7. Contribute software code, configuration files, implementation documents etc. to SourceForge
  8. Present the workflow at public events
